zach and miri make a porno banned poster 201x300 Zack and Miri Make a Porno not as bad as it looksBeing one of the of , I am continually being hounded by the government, my doctor, my , ex- and old ladies about the dangers that it entails. Strange then that whilst smoking “normal” cigarettes is shunned by the public, / etc is not. Can anyone tell me why it is considered more “normal” when you smoke weed than when you just smoke? Surely it is as bad for you!

There is a point to this. I tend to not like Seth Rogan films due to the many references to drug use. Knocked Up and are prime examples of this debate. However I decided to at least try and watch Seth Rogan’s latest acting role in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Why on earth did (the director/writer) think it’d be a good idea to entitle his latest film in this way? It seems completely crazy. Is this a at getting some on the big screen?

Synopsis:

Lifelong platonic friends Zack and Miri look to solve their respective cash-flow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begins to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.

Critique:

As I began the movie, it occurred to me how much I hate “base ”. I despise it. Perhaps it is because I am a stiff but I would rather my comedy a little smarter (this is coming from a man who enjoyed My Name is Bruce). Nevertheless I persevered and found a film hiding amongst the trash (very nearly a diamond in the rough) just as long as you give it some time.

You watch Zack and Miri not because of the acting (because there doesn’t seem to be any in it). You don’t watch it because of the promise of pornography, because you soon find this not to be the case. In fact the people who would enjoy it are exactly the people who are not likely to go and see it. In this way, it is a great shame (hopefully rectified by DVD sales).

Seth Rogan spends 1 hour and 40 minutes being Seth Rogan. Elizabeth Banks lowers herself further by being in the film initially but makes up for it later. I am eternally grateful that the main characters do not do the full Monty in Zack and Miri because I would’ve walked out (and quickly).

After sitting through a very un-entertaining beginning, something unexpected happens (well, not that unexpected). Zack and Miri are introduced to the highly amusing and very gay Justin Long and Brandon Routh (that’s Superman to you and me). They start the catalyst of “good ideas” that ultimately lead Zack and Miri to think it a good idea to make a porno. This scene is the beginning of some highly amusing ones and none of them actually include Seth Rogan. In fact the second Rogan is on screen, I feel an overwhelming urge to stop laughing. Perhaps he comes across as if he finds himself too funny. Whatever it is, Rogan and Banks simply don’t have the good laughs.

The comedy then comes from supporting character. These include Lester (who has now explained to me what a “Dutch Rudder” is) to Delaney (a quite brilliant performance by Craig Robinson). Even the actual experienced porn stars are of great entertainment (Traci Lords and Katie Morgan). Perhaps this was a deliberate attempt by Kevin Smith to have the main characters the only unfunny characters in the movie. Whatever the intention, it works and this is because of true story underneath all this base humour.
Zack and Miri is in the romance genre. It seems that after naming the film something that is likely to offend everyone, Zack and Miri throws you a curveball (I’ve never been one to read a synopsis) by putting complicated dynamics into the mix such as love.

This film will not be everyone’s cup of tea. In fact in one way or another it is likely to offend (in some way) anyone who is watching it. Yet this oddball movie is actually quite endearing in its own way; sadly let down by its leading man.

Conclusion:

Christopher Marlowe prose it is not. However if you can get past the title, Seth Rogan’s self love and watch Zack and Miri (just for the hell of it) it’ll surprise you.  You’ll find yourself being dragged into this crazy world where two grown adults act like teenagers (much like being in the army).  I for one enjoyed it in a: slightly-more-than-mediocre-way. Watch it if you’re bored and you never know you may start to laugh!

Rating: 3 out of 5

  • Former marijuana addict says:

Some Seth Rogan films do tend to be stoner films and stoners will watch anything that involves references to weed or marijuana. Its only now I have quit marijuana that I realize that the whole dope humor thing, wasn’t as funny as I thought it was. This film was ok, I would give it 6 out of 10.
